How to plan a business website before the design starts

Plan your website’s goals, content and contact paths before design begins, so every page has a clear purpose.

Planning a business website starts with deciding what visitors need to accomplish. Understanding the company, assessing a service and requesting a proposal are different tasks. Design works better when those tasks guide pages, content and navigation.

Before choosing an animation or platform, organise the decisions below. They help build a website that gives potential clients enough information to take a useful next step.

Define the purpose and the next action

Choose the site’s primary role and the paths to enquiry. A service business may prioritise quote requests. A creative studio may need people to understand its approach and review projects before making contact.

For each audience, write down a question and a reasonable next action. “Can you work with a business like ours?” needs clear service information and relevant work. The next step may be a conversation or a brief rather than an immediate purchase.

Give each page a clear job

  • Home introduces the business and guides the first choices.
  • Services explain the offer, process and suitable situations.
  • Projects show the context, decisions and applications of the work.
  • About introduces the people and collaboration approach.
  • Journal answers useful questions and connects them to services.
  • Contact provides a straightforward path to enquiry.

This is a starting point rather than a required page count. Add a page when it has a distinct purpose and enough original information. Avoid creating nearly identical pages solely to repeat locations or search terms.

Plan content before finalising screens

List the copy, images and supporting information needed for each page. Identify who writes, checks factual details and supplies assets. Missing photography or an unclear service description can force redesign after the layout has been approved.

Use headings that name the offer. A distinctive headline can introduce the brand, but visitors still need to understand the deliverables. Case studies should explain real decisions without inventing metrics or testimonials.

For a global site, decide which audiences and languages matter first. Plan how each version will handle terminology, contact routes and relevant service details. Translating navigation alone leaves an incomplete experience.

Decide how the team will maintain the site

Specify what needs to be editable: services, projects, articles, images and contact details. A WordPress content model can give routine updates a consistent structure while protecting the visual system.

Assign responsibility for publishing, updates, backups and form checks. Include translation review in the workflow. A multilingual page needs corresponding content and links, not simply an automated language label.

Include SEO and performance early

Important pages need stable URLs, descriptive titles, accessible content and internal links. Images should have suitable dimensions and file sizes, with alternative text where it communicates meaningful information. Test video and animation on smaller devices as well as desktop.

Google’s SEO Starter Guide explains how search optimisation helps search engines understand content. It does not guarantee a ranking. Useful information, a clear structure and a good experience need to work together.

Before-design checklist

  • The main objective and next actions are defined.
  • Each page has a purpose and a content owner.
  • Services and case studies provide enough information to evaluate the offer.
  • Ongoing editing and maintenance are planned.
  • Languages, forms and integrations are included in scope.
  • The schedule includes mobile reading, navigation and submission checks.

Does every word need to be ready? Not always, but the structure and essential information should be clear. Agree on when content will be produced and reviewed.

Are animations bad for a website? Their effect depends on implementation. They should support the experience and be tested without obstructing reading or navigation.
